As one of the top cosmetic procedures performed in the U.S. every year, liposuction has helped a wide range of patients make their ideal physique a reality. That said, there are many misconceptions about surgical fat removal that may erroneously inform your idea of the procedure. There are many liposuction myths that Dr. Leber would be happy to clarify and patients interested in the procedure should remember the following:
- Liposuction does not stop you from gaining weight — A popular misconception about liposuction is that the procedure prevents weight gain. This is simply untrue. While the fat cells removed during surgery are gone forever, your remaining cells can still enlarge and cause fat accumulation with an increase in weight.
- Liposuction cannot get rid of excess skin — While liposuction removes stubborn fat, body sculpting surgery does nothing to trim loose, hanging skin. If your concerns include getting rid of redundant skin, Dr. Leber recommends a tummy tuck, arm lift, or one of our other body lifting procedures.
- Liposuction is not performed to treat cellulite — Cellulite is a concern for many patients, especially for women. Although liposuction can reduce fat in the treated area(s), the procedure is not an effective way to treat cellulite.
- Liposuction can be successful for both older and younger patients — Many people believe liposuction is only a treatment for younger individuals; however, there is no “ideal” age range to undergo liposuction. Candidacy is more determined by the quality of a patient’s skin tone rather than their age.
Each person is evaluated for the procedure individually and there are many factors that can influence whether liposuction is the best treatment for you, including the quality of your skin, your weight, and your medical history, among other indications. The best way to safeguard your health and appearance is to ensure you select a qualified plastic surgeon to perform surgery.
